Voices From the Principal’s Office: Successful Principals Reveal How Leadership Coaching Builds Capacity

Mon, April 7, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 118A

Abstract

This investigation explored how leadership coaching impacted the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of early career principals, at P-12 public schools, regarding leadership and management in schools. A qualitative methodology included analysis of interviews with successful principals, based on positive student achievement gains at their schools, and their coaches as well as coaches' logs. Participants' perceptions about their experience in the program reveal eight themes related to the value of the coaching experience and changes in leadership behaviors. These results support the leadership qualities identified in the literature and professional leadership standards. This information will assist professional developers, university professors, and school personnel as they structure and implement programs to support P-12 school administrators.
