The purpose of this paper is to present research on issues related to the internal and external influences on student success while enrolled in a developmental mathematics course at a community college. The paper includes qualitative case study methods that investigate the topic using concepts of critical pedagogy. The findings are related to educational practices that are influenced by internal and external dynamics. This study is relevant to the 2014 AERA Annual Meeting Theme,“The Power of Education Research for Innovation in Practice and Policy,” as this paper addresses student success and subsequently limits college completion or achievement of educational goals. Furthermore, the findings extends our understanding of ways educational leaders might improve institutional practices while negotiating multiple influences.
