We used confirmatory factor analysis on a large, randomly selected, national sample (N = 3,657) to test the measurement model of The Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement (OS) developed by Denton, Ciancio, and Fletcher (2004). Using a sample of first graders in six urban schools (N = 182) from a larger study, Denton et al. (2004) determined that the underlying structure of the OS was composed of two factors or dimensions based on four of the six tasks of the OS. We determined that the underlying structure of the OS is unidimensional based on our analysis of mid-year scores on five of the six tasks of the OS in this large dataset.
