Abstract

The DIVAS (Distinguished, Intellectual, Virtuous, Academic, Sistas) The primary theory upon which DIVAS is built is othermothering. collective has allowed Black women doctoral students and now new professionals to “stand in the gap” and become of the othermother (Guiffrida, 2005). Freire,(1998) contends that there is no teaching without learning. The space created by the DIVAS provides opportunities for both teaching and learning as we have pursued our degrees and matriculated into the academy.
