Innovation in Practice and Policy: Examining Curriculum Policies and Practices in Gifted Education

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Specific curricular provisions for gifted, the extent to which curriculum for gifted students aligns to the NAGC Pre-K – Grade 12 Gifted Programming Standards, and the impact of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and NCLB on curriculum for the gifted have been studied only to a limited extent. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to examine curriculum offerings for gifted students at the school district level relative to gifted education programming standards and 2) to determine the impact of recent curriculum reform efforts on curriculum for the gifted. Findings indicated that many districts have attempted to adopt or develop curricula that address the evidence-based practices and that curriculum reform has had a significant impact on gifted education programming.
