Arts-Based Learning and Instruction in an Elementary School: The Case of “Mano a Mano”

Abstract

“Mano a Mano,” a unique, annual, school-wide, arts-based, interdisciplinary project in one New York City K – 8 public school, integrated academic subjects and literacy with visual and the performing arts (Jacobs, 1989; Olshansky, 2008) throughout the year. Further, teachers, students, parent volunteers, community-based artists, and partnership organizations worked together to showcase children’s work and talent in an end of year performance. Results of a qualitative case study revealed members of the school and community partnered closely to strengthen learning experiences for all students. This paper explores the nature of Mano a Mano, and describes the experiences and views of school staff, volunteers, parents, and students, highlighting the project’s influence on the life of the school, learning and instruction.
