Multicultural Curriculum Policy and Ethnolinguistic-Minority Students’ Academic Engagement: A Cross-National Policy Evaluation

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 115B

Abstract

In recent decades, multiculturalism has emerged as an important policy issue in an increasing number of national education systems. Given the rising popularity of multicultural education around the world, reflective evaluations of current curricular policies on multicultural education are necessary to assess their intended and unintended effects on students’ academic engagement. Based on extensive data from more than 110,000 students across 30 countries, a series of within-nation hierarchical linear modeling analyses were conducted, followed by a set of cross-national regression analyses. The results shed light on the need for sustained efforts to develop a curriculum model that can effectively support ethnolinguistic minority students’ learning in terms of both their academic enjoyment and performance.
