SUMMARY OF SYMPOSIUM/PANEL COMMENTARY
Purpose and Perspectives
Developing and sustaining globally-minded and culturally responsive educator preparation programs demands a systematic and integrated approach (U.S. DOE, 2012, Asia Society, 2008 and 2010; NEA, 2010; Mansilla & Jackson, 2011; Longview Foundation, 2008; West, 2012). At the institutional level, change initiatives ranging from re-envisioning of policies to recalibration of practices require thoughtful leadership, community-wide commitment, and strategic management of resources, processes, and outcomes. At the national level, a profession-wide consensus on common expectations is necessary for systematic and sustainable advancement.
Methods and Evidence
Presenters from each of the institutions will discuss institution-specific factors and strategic actions within the larger context of minority serving institutions (MSIs) and the state-specific policy environments. Following the overall structure of the symposium, the presenters will share progresses and challenges in the areas of (1) leadership development and strategic planning, (2) process design and implementation, and (3) resource management and progress monitoring. Data collected and lessons learned from changes in policies such as the College of Education Strategic Plans and bylaws, and practices such as in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, clinical practice, and assessment will be summarized and used for discussion.
Implications and Significance
Aligning with the overall framework of the symposium, the presenters will facilitate hands-on activities designed to co-create a set of common expectations among MSIs with repertoires of processes and strategies that are adaptable within institutional contexts. Collectively, the session intends to facilitate the development of innovative models toward internationalizing educator preparation programs.
