Reconstructing the Como Narrative: Creating Space for Neglected Voices in an African American Community

Mon, April 7, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This paper describes our work in Como, a historically African American neighborhood in Fort Worth, Texas, that inspired our research team to create a documentary about this unique community. Our documentary creates a space for previously neglected voices in Como’s narrative while also offering residents an opportunity to challenge the one-dimensional stereotypes surrounding this diverse group by sharing the previously ignored stories embedded in Como’s rich history.
