Science With Audemes: How a New Assistive Technology Impacts Blind and Visually Impaired Learners

Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 113C

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel educational resource (audemes) that can be adapted to enhance science instruction for all learners. The study will use qualitative and quantitative data from two years of audemes programming at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to examine the development and utilization of audemes and audeme games in science classrooms, and to investigate the impact of audeme usage on student outcomes (in terms of academic performance, engagement, and attitudes towards science). The study will identify strengths and areas of development for future programming, present relevant policy recommendations regarding the education of blind and visually impaired students, and provide guidance for how audemes might be incorporated into various science classroom environments.
