Abstract

Anticipated shortages in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have lead to calls for colleges and universities to produce more STEM graduates. This is especially true for minorities who represent an ever increasing percentage of our population, yet only a fraction of those earning STEM degrees. More information is needed about factors that influence the successes and challenges of minorities in STEM fields. The literature has given little attention to the ways in which minority students’ experiences shape their belonging in STEM fields and learning in practical competence, one of the student learning outcomes acknowledged by STEM professional associations. Our study examines the effects of sense of belonging and deep learning on practical competence among minorities in STEM.
