Increased efforts to promote 21st Century learning skills emphasize the central role of technology in the delivery of instruction, the focus of which is designed to advance the multifaceted abilities and skills required for student success in an increasing technology-rich learning and working environment. Using a predominantly qualitative approach, a pilot study was implemented in a large, economically diverse southeastern school district to examine the instructional implications of six mobile computing devices. Teacher interviews and student focus groups revealed one-to-one student access to technology increased student self-direction, engagement, motivation, and created greater opportunities for formative feedback. Participants described the technology benefits of increased communication and collaboration. However, suitability of the device/technology differed by content area and grade level.
