A relatively new approach to principal professional development is the use of multisource feedback on their leadership effectiveness coupled with individualized leadership coaching. Yet there is little research on how coaching can influence how principals respond to and utilize data from multisource feedback systems. The purpose of this paper is to explore how principals interpret and make use of multisource feedback while receiving one on one leadership coaching. Specifically, we examine how principals’ responses to coaching are shaped by their overall ratings of effectiveness as instructional leaders, the gaps between their own self-assessment of their leadership effectiveness and their teachers’ ratings of their leadership effectiveness, and school performance.
