The Effects of After-School Programs on English Language Learners’ Academic Achievement: Hierarchical Linear Modeling Approach

Sat, April 5, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This study examined the effects of after school programs on English Language learners’ (ELLs) academic achievement employing the Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Focusing on seventh grade ELL students from the data of the state-wide evaluation of after school programs, the study investigated not only which characteristics of program participants and programs but also the kinds of activities provided by the programs have effects on students’ performance. The results showed that more frequent participation in the program and the smaller number of students benefited ELLs. In addition, the study revealed that tutoring was helpful especially for low-achieving ELL students.
