Guided by the AERA theme preamble on the power of educational research for innovation in practice and policy and by Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s caution about the stigma of research due to its negative impact on many indigenous peoples and communities, this paper will present commentaries by four Native Hawaiian community members/elders on their beliefs about research, their experiences with research (both institutional research and their own community research), the role that research plays in elevating the educational well being of their people, and their role in the conceptualization, conduct, and dissemination of research designed to elevate the educational well-being of their community.
