It is particularly challenging for students to learn and apply authentic scientific practices in the field of ecology and environmental sciences if the context for learning does not include interaction with outdoor environments. Our research combined a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) that provides students a scaffolded inquiry experience with field trip experiences to real environments infused with virtual resources. Our research supports using instructional strategies based on these complementary technologies to guide student learning of complex concepts and authentic scientific practices during outdoor experiences.
