The Digital Academy: Toward a Model for Academic Digital Literacy Development in Higher Education

Abstract

With increasing demands on learners to understand and effectively use a growing body of technological tools, we contend that today’s college-goers are ill-prepared for translating digital skills and knowledge from the personal realm to academe. This roundtable session will explore the literature from areas related to digital education, literacy, and competency in an effort to advance a model of academic digital literacy development in a higher education context. Using Malcolm Knowles’ (1984) theory of andragogy and Allan Martin’s (2008) theoretical model for digital literacy, we will offer a potential model that details the levels of literacy learners develop from academic use of digital technologies.
