Community-Based Research and Participatory Curriculum Practices: Imagining Possibilities for Graduate Education Policies

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Local knowledge and perspectives need to be considered the basis for research and policymaking. Using community-based research and participatory curriculum practices, this study was intended to understand and promote community participation as a strategy to create changes in graduate education policies and practices. The study was carried in a high diverse, semi-rural community, located in the coastal area of a Latin American country. It was informed by an initial literature and policy review, followed by community research. A variety of research methods was used, but seminars and vivencia were critical. Some implications for graduate education practices and policies such as the need to know communities, to revisit national graduate education policies, and to provide spaces for participation were identified.
