Positioning Practices Across Pairs of Students Working on Computers in High School Mathematics

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Collaborative learning is both a goal and a means of mathematics instruction, but we cannot assume that students who work together in pairs or groups will achieve collaboration in their work. In this presentation, I use the system of Negotiation to examine how students positioned themselves towards their peers while working in pairs on a technology-based problem in Algebra II. Positioning through interactions is a dynamic process, but students’ positioning moves have implications for how ideas are taken up and used among peers working together. Students’ positioning practices can support them in developing shared mathematical meanings and the joint production of ideas while working with peers.
