Abstract

Te Kotahitanga is a long-term, iterative, research and development programme derived from the educational experiences of Indigenous Māori students and teachers in a number of New Zealand secondary schools. These experiences were developed into an Effective Teaching Profile that was used to support teachers to reform classroom pedagogy in ways that would engage Māori students more effectively and to use student evidence to reflect critically on their own praxis.
This paper discusses how teachers were able to develop relational and culturally responsive contexts for learning, and how evidence from theses contexts was applied subsequently by school leaders to critically evaluate the teaching and leadership practices across their own schools, thus resulting in more successful outcomes for Māori students.
