This study was a longitudinal study of literacy development in a sample of Canadian children of different socio-economic status. Specifically, the growth curves of socioeconomically disadvantaged children were compared to their low-middle and high SES counterparts. The results indicated that low SES children started school with less developed literacy skills than than higher income peers. However, over time the SES difference became less prominent. Moreover, over time, those in the low SES group also progressed at a higher rate than those in the high SES category.
