This paper reports on an evolving study of the use of videos in teacher education to help novice teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice. The study took place over a period of three years, in one unit of a student teaching seminar for high school social studies teachers. The unit culminated in a multimedia paper that analyzed videos of experienced teachers. Comparisons explored how different conditions – including participation in group vs. paired discussions and viewing videos of one vs. two teachers – may influence the connections student teachers make between their coursework and in their own practice and the extent to which their initial pedagogical beliefs are reinforced or challenged.
