Off-Label Teaching of Reading: An Ethic of Care During Literacy Practices in a Bilingual Third-Grade Classroom

Abstract

This qualitative case study examined how a third grade bilingual teacher and her students enacted an ethic of care during literacy practices. Analysis of the discourse revealed that participants used an ethic of care as innovation in teaching and learning while using a required scripted reading curriculum to prepare students for a high-stakes reading assessment. Care during literacy practices resulted in what I call an off-label use of the scripted reading curriculum required by the district. This kind of teaching of reading increased students’ self-efficacy in reading and writing. It also built upon students’ linguistics resources and classroom relationships while it forged connections between school and students’ homes and communities.
