The purpose of this study is to identify and verify the factor structure that underlies parenting beliefs. A large sample (n = 1030) of parents’ self-report data on Beliefs About Parenting Scale (BAPS) from other longitudinal studies was randomly split in two halves to conduct the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and then the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The EFA suggested a model comprised of four factors: social and academic assistance, serious learning, modeling and scaffolding behaviors, and motivating behaviors. The factor structure specified by the EFA was then used as the basis to fit to the other half of the data using the CFA. The results from the CFA supported the model specifications provided by the EFA.
