Technology-Integrated Middle School Program: Student Engagement and Success in Language Arts

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This convergent mixed-method case study was designed to investigate the impact of technology-integrated instruction implemented via iPad applications on middle school students’ achievement in language arts and literacy. Middle school students of today are different from those in the past, and new technologies are needed to motivate their learning, especially for students that are labeled “at-risk.” Analyses of state mandated test and benchmark exams scores, along with a participant-completed survey regarding motivation and engagement were conducted. A content analysis of student artifacts was completed to further reflect student learning. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this program on both achievement and engagement. Specific examples of learning activities and ICT applications that support the middle school language arts curriculum are provided.
