The Role of Parental School-Based Involvement in Organizing a Better School Community

Mon, April 7, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

To date, the majority of work on school-based PI has examined the effects on individual student outcomes. As a result, little is known if the positive benefits of school-based PI hold the same significance for schools. Using the ECLS-K dataset, we examined the long-term impact on school-level achievement and climate of school-based PI. HLM analyses indicated that three types of school-based PI played significant roles in boosting school achievement and creating a better school climate. However, additional attention should be devoted to supporting parents’ ability to establish effective peer networks within a school, and to improving schools’ ability to leverage the capital of lower-SES families.
