Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 103C

Abstract

The recent ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas has inherently rehashed conversations around diversity in higher education. This study examines the dental student perspective of the academic diversity climate using mixed methods. A conceptual framework was developed from the literature review and existing diversity frameworks. Dental students were recruited from the 2013 American Dental Education Association Annual Session. Ten students participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews, 22 in a focus group, and 56 (response 76%) completed the survey questionnaire. Preliminary data analysis identified significant individuals, events, actions, and behaviors involved in shaping the diversity climate at academic dental institutions. The findings can inform policy and leaders in dental and higher education community of student perspectives and experiences with diversity.
