Research on formative assessment has become prevalent due to its’ potential positive effect on learning. However, students’ views of formative assessment are still largely unknown. This study focuses on developing a better understanding of formative assessment through students’ perspectives. First, we ask if students serve as reliable and valid sources of information about the practice. We then investigate the types of teacher actions that students identify as serving each of the formative assessment dimensions. The ultimate goal of the study is to use students’ responses to create a fixed response survey instrument to gather information about their views of formative assessment. We present the survey instrument to show how students’ perspectives can provide insight into classroom formative assessment practices.
