Immersive and Disruptive: 21st-Century Teacher Professional Development

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Education Educational Technology Plan called for teacher professional development programs that lead to transformative teaching with technology. To date, there is evidence that many teachers are still making incremental changes to adapt technology to their teaching. Emergent research has demonstrated that immersive and disruptive learning environments can be effective methods to bring about transformative practices. This case study investigated a particular program that provided an immersive and disruptive learning process that could shed light on how immersive and disruptive professional development could support transformational teaching. Findings revealed that over a three year period, there were indications of transformative practices.
