Abstract

This study applies the Rasch measurement to develop the Chinese Heritage Learners’ Motivation Scale (CHLMS). A total of 116 Chinese heritage learners studying at community-based schools were recruited.
Much research on second/heritage language learners' motivation has been done over the past decades. However, most instruments are not developed according to an objective measurement model. Moreover, ordinal data have been routinely treated as equal interval data. To fill this gap, the CHLMS was developed.
The analysis using Rasch measurement is reported and illustrated in the paper. Findings and implications obtained from the Rasch model suggests that the unidimensional construct of Chinese heritage learners’ motivation is captured by the scale but item revisions are needed for future use.
