International Indicators of Teacher Quality: Cross-Cultural Implications for Teacher Efficacy

Abstract

This study examined which international indicators of teacher quality, as measured by the 2008 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), were predictive of increased levels of teacher efficacy. Additional individual and national level factors were also considered using multi-level regression analysis consisting of three models and a null model for Intra Class Correlation. Results determined that individual teacher participation in professional development experiences and a country’s culture of respecting its teachers at a local level were significantly associated with increased levels of teacher efficacy. Implications for policy makers hoping to promote positive educational outcomes are discussed.
