This paper describes findings from a study that examines whether the formation and development of research alliances vary by the characteristics of each alliance. Education Development Center, through its role as the Regional Educational Laboratory – Northeast and Islands (REL-NEI), has established eight research alliances in the region. While each alliance is staffed with a two-person team from REL-NEI, these alliances vary in composition and in characteristics. Some alliances are composed primarily of staff from state education agencies while others from local education agencies. Some alliances are located and serve a single jurisdiction while others serve stakeholders across multiple states or districts. The study provides findings about the influence of alliance characteristics and the formation and development of alliances.
