This study investigated levels of exploration that preschool children demonstrate during play with science museum materials designed to provoke scientific inquiry. The Exploratory Behavior Scale was used as an observation tool. Results showed that in five highly used activity areas the predominant interaction type was exploratory, suggesting that children found the materials engaging for scientific behavior. Passive behavior observed in these areas may reflect a need to watch the play of others before engaging with unfamiliar or complex materials. Children exhibited predominantly active not exploratory behavior in lowest use areas. Connections to pre-school classroom practices and materials are discussed.
