Since scientifically based research (SBR) was written into federal legislation just over ten years ago, who gets to define science for education has emerged as one of the most significant questions confronting educational researchers. This paper demonstrates that SBR is a response to a manufactured problem that has no rational, scientific foundation on which to stand and cannot even meet its own criteria for sound science by examining the supposed “origin” of SBR—the contention that educational research was of poor quality.
