One of the critical factors in determining an online community’s success is understanding the value that members find through their participation. The purpose of this study was to use Wenger, Trayner, and de Laat’s (2011) framework for assessing and promoting value creation to develop a nuanced understanding of the value that educators find through their participation in online communities. Findings illuminate specific ways members with varying perspectives and levels of expertise can co-construct new forms of meaning and understanding in ways that are individually and collectively valuable. Additionally, the study offers insight into how the actions of community leaders and a sponsoring organization support or facilitate value creation through different the types of activities, tools, and interactions.
