Post-Civil Rights: Postracial but Still No Seat at the Table of Educational Equity

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 203A

Abstract

This study examines the ways in which racial inequalities and ideologies are reproduced in schools and the implications for the socialization of Black people. Using historical analysis and oral histories this paper tells the story of the Black k-12 educational experience through the narratives of participants who are part of the Hip-Hop/Generation X born during the period of 1970 -1987 and the Millennial/Generation Y generations born during the period of 1988 – 1995) (Kitwana, 2002,Strauss & Howe, 2000). Three themes emerge from the findings: (1) There is a cross-generational value of education, (2) Teachers, peers and the negative expectations for achievement and (3) The persistence of the eugenics ideology in educational institutions.
