This paper presents findings of a mixed-methods study of use of a built-in chat window during synchronous, video-enabled virtual class sessions. Observations of 3 graduate level classrooms, 9 student interviews, and survey data from 200 students and 10 instructors were collected to describe how instructors and students engage with the chat window in both whole group and small group settings. The findings of this study suggest that instructor interaction in the chat, creating a "sidechannel," is critical to chat effectiveness and minimizing off topic conversation. To that end, instructor training on the technology or comfort with the technology is critical.
