Ongoing Professional Learning for Superintendents: A Descriptive Analysis of a Network Approach to Professional Development

Abstract

Previous research has addressed the use of professional learning as a mechanism for instructional improvement. However, this work focused primarily on teachers and principals. This research builds on existing work by focusing on how superintendents develop their knowledge and expertise (Orr, 2006; Spillane, Healy, & Parise, 2009) in a professional learning environment dedicated solely to superintendents. Preliminary findings suggest superintendents value professional development opportunities that allow them time to reflect on their work, engage with research and learn from other superintendents. Findings also suggest that the challenges superintendents face are largely shared, as are their goals for their districts. This adds further evidence to the potential promise of ongoing learning opportunities for superintendents using a network model of professional development.
