Exploring Data Use Practices Among Elementary School Teachers in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago: Implications for Teacher Training Policy

Abstract

In this study we explore the utility of the Schildkamp and Kuiper (2010) theoretical model of data use in the context of elementary school teachers in Trinidad and Tobago. The model focuses upon characteristics of the user, the quality of the data and the characteristics of the organization. A national survey of 492 educators was conducted. Multilevel and canonical correlation analyses were used to examine the patterns of data use. The preliminary results indicate that teachers value classroom data above that of national learning assessments and public examinations. High data use was associated with specific organizational characteristics and behaviours such as collaboration among teachers.
