Eco-Interplay: Adapting Ecological-Mindedness for a Standards-Based Environment

Abstract

This study builds upon ongoing research of ecological mindedness by exploring how teachers perceive and use the themes of ecological care, interconnectedness and ecological integrity. Research questions include: How do teachers perceive and use the themes of ecological mindedness? What are the perceived values and the perceived limitations of the themes for teachers who use them for their curriculum planning? The methodology employed, educational connoisseurship and criticism, affords the opportunity to create individual portraits of teachers and to articulate individual perceptions, along with a cross-participant analysis of common themes. Initial findings of the on-going analysis include definitional flexibility of the themes of ecological mindedness and adaptability of existing curricula to incorporate themes into standards-based content.
