Women play multiple roles every day that influence their thinking and shape their sense of the self. Grounded in empirical evidence from three years – 1991, 1993 and 2003 – of the National Longitudinal Survey for Young Women (NLSYW), and using sociological role theories as the framework, this research study systematically explores the relationship between women’s positive attitude about self and her different roles in labor market, family, and community. Results from multiple linear regression analyses confirm and complicate our understandings of these roles and its impact on the self in social contexts. It also discusses their implications in understanding the real and opportunity costs associated with decision-making in life that women encounter both inside and outside the household.
