This inquiry focuses on how high school-aged musicians who play contemporary music learn music that is personally significant to them. Five young musicians participating in an elective after-school music performance program were interviewed and site visits conducted at this after-school music program. Framing ideas of musical identity, learning in and across multiple settings, and self-directed learning were employed. Results include the formulation of a ‘network of musical learning’ concept whereby students navigate and integrate multiple learning environments—each offering unique content and types of supports—in pursuit of musical goals. Student goals, interests, and identities were found to be significantly related to musical learning. Possible implications of this work in addressing inequalities in music education quality and access are explored.
