Abstract

In this paper, I examine the pivotal concept of “nature” that has shaped the historical development of environmental education in the U. S. and beyond. Such an examination is crucial to a critical hermeneutic that seeks to illumine the conflicting cultural and ethical values underlying ecologically congenial educational paradigms, theories, and practices. I further explore non-dualistic discursive frameworks that might facilitate dialogues in search of common ground upon which to build environmental education in the new millennium.
