An adaptation of a convergent parallel mixed methods design was utilized to describe the nature of secondary physics classrooms as a precursor to the implementation of physics teacher professional development. A contiguous convergent parallel design was devised to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data specific to three sources: Teachers, students, and outside observers. Quantitative and qualitative data from each source were analyzed and integrated simultaneously with a final integration of all three as the culminating product. The goal of the session is to present the method and findings, and to discuss design issues surrounding the contiguous convergent parallel design.
