Racial and Athletic Identity of African American Athletes at Predominantly White Institutions

Abstract

College adjustment has evolved theoretically from academic performance to a focus on multidimensional nature of college experiences (Steinfeldt, 2011). Research has led to the indication that African Americans are at greater risk for poorer college adjustment (Steinfeldt, 2011). African American student athletes face isolation, discrimination, and integration as barriers to positive college adjustment (Hyatt, 2003; Steinfeldt, Reed, & Steinfeldt, 2010). This presentation will discuss issues of African American athletic and racial identity at PWI’s. This research has implications to pathways to improving diversity on PWI’s.
