Inquiry-Based Multidisciplinary STEM and Lesson Study as Cornerstones in Innovating Professional Learning for Secondary Teachers

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 204A

Abstract

Inquiry is a recognized mode of research as well as an effective model of learning. This session reports on the progress of a multidisciplinary STEM learning community at one high poverty high school. A two-year, multidisciplinary lesson study highlights the progress in student learning outcomes and teacher professional development. This learning community demonstrates inquiry at three levels: Classroom inquiry in designing engaging, innovative learning environments, teachers professional development through inquiry in lesson study; and inquiry as a model of school reform initiative. This collaborative model demonstrates the power of inquiry in fostering a culture of innovation, developing school leaders, advancing instruction, and improving student learning by designing experiences focusing on relevancy for under-achieving high school students.
