This paper examines the use of one pedagogical tool, describing how it supported preservice teachers’ learning about English language learners across three planes of analysis: community, interpersonal and individual. Community plane analysis showed preservice teachers understandings were tied to societal and community norms, including immigration policies and school adopted programs. Analysis on the interpersonal plane showed that learning was influenced through interactions, both planned and unexpected, situated in the course context. Analysis on the individual plane offered examples of how preservice teachers changed ideas, took on new learning, or clarified previous concepts. These findings matter to those designing and implementing practices used with preservice teachers.
