The Phenomenon of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Rural Western North Carolina

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Franklin 2

Abstract

Available research on culturally responsive pedagogy focuses on issues surrounding urban education. Little research is available on rural classrooms. This study examined how rural teachers exhibited culturally responsive practices in diverse rural schools. The author constructed a framework specifically on rural CRP from the existing literature base. This was a multi-case phenomenological study featuring four theory-based, purposefully selected rural teachers. Findings indicate multiple similarities between urban and rural CRP, but also found unique characteristics. Findings have implications for differentiating pre-service teacher preparation in rural environments.
