Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to examine the long-term effects of the HIPPY program participation during the preschool years on the educational achievement, aspirations, and parent involvement of high school seniors. Participants were high school seniors at a large, urban school district in the Southwest who were flagged as having participated in HIPPY as preschoolers as well as their parents/guardians. Former HIPPY students performed either significantly above or on par with the district average on the following: GPA, state mandated exams, PSAT, SAT, and ACT scores. They had high academic motivation (M=4.29 out of 5) and educational aspirations as well. In addition, the parents of these former HIPPY students report themselves to be highly involved in their child’s education.
