Teachers today are asked to make several “shifts”—including shifts to adopt the Common Core State Standards, integrate technology, and develop 21st Century skills. These shifts require changes in curriculum, pedagogy, and adoption of new tools; yet, teachers are given little support to make these changes. This research explores professional development features that can support urban teachers in making substantive shifts in the use of technology, project-based learning and CCCS—capturing data from two years of design-based research around the development and implementation of a professional development model for a high-needs urban district. With this intensive four-week professional development experience, teachers were able to make notable strides in designing projects, incorporating technology, and using authentic assessments.
